Stanmore Hill

The walk up Stanmore Hill from Horncastle rewards you with proper views across the Lincolnshire Wolds - a landscape that rolls more gently than you'd expect this far east. It's not a mountain, obviously. At 117 metres it's barely a foothill, but out here where the land flattens toward the North Sea, even modest height gives you something.

The ascent itself is straightforward, taking maybe 20 minutes from the base. On a clear day you can see across farmland and villages in a way that makes you understand why this corner of Lincolnshire appeals to walkers. The Wolds have a quiet rhythm to them - nothing dramatic, just honest countryside.

You'll get the most from this if you're combining it with a longer ramble through the National Landscape (it starts 5.7 miles away) rather than treating it as a standalone trip. Folk staying at Stewton Stars Hideaway or Oxcombe Campsite - both within five miles - can easily work it into a morning's walking without fuss.

There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no entrance fee. Just a hill, a path, and the view. Go early if you want solitude, though honestly you're unlikely to be fighting crowds whatever time you arrive. On a grey day it's fairly unremarkable; save this for when the weather's playing ball and you've got time to sit up there for a bit. Worth a detour if you're in the area for the broader Wolds, less essential if you're only passing through.
