Carreg Cannan

Carreg Cannan is a standing stone in Gwynedd that sits quietly in the landscape near Caernarfon, the sort of place you'd stumble upon while out walking rather than plan a dedicated trip to. It's a Bronze Age monument - just a single upright stone, really - but there's something about these solitary markers that makes you stop and think about who put it there and why, four thousand years ago.

The appeal here is modest and honest. This isn't Stonehenge. You won't spend hours wandering around or queuing for a visitor centre. What you get is a straightforward walk to a prehistoric stone in proper Welsh countryside, and if archaeology or Neolithic history gets you going, that's enough. It's the kind of thing hikers and local history types will appreciate; families might find it a bit underwhelming on its own unless they're already exploring the Caernarfon area.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Llanberis Touring Park and Glamping in Llanberis are both within six miles - you could easily combine this with a broader walking route or a visit to Caernarfon Castle itself. The stone works best as part of a day out rather than a standalone destination. Allow half an hour or so for the site itself, depending on the walk in. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so come prepared with decent shoes and a map. Best visited on a clear day when the views across the surrounding hills actually reward the effort.
