About National Trust - Carneddau and Glyderau

Two vast mountain ranges dominate the skyline south of Caernarfon, and the National Trust looks after most of them. Carneddau and Glyderau aren't single peaks - they're serious walking country spanning thousands of acres of moorland, rock, and ridge. You'll find everything from gentle valley trails to proper mountain scrambles that need a head for heights.

Walkers absolutely make or break this place. If you're into it, you could spend weeks exploring the maze of ridges and tarns. The views across Snowdonia are genuinely outstanding, especially from Pen yr Ole Wen or Tryfan - Tryfan in particular is magnificent but absolutely brutal to climb. In bad weather it's grim. In good weather, you're looking at some of Wales' finest mountain walking.

There's no visitor centre or paid admission - it's proper mountain access land. The Trust maintains paths and access points rather than creating attractions. Most people base themselves at one of the nearby parks around Llanberis or Llyn Gwynant and use them as starting points for day walks.

Families with young kids will struggle with the serious peaks, though the lower valley walks around Ogwen are manageable and pleasant. This isn't a stroll-around-for-an-hour situation - you need decent boots, a map, and realistic fitness. Winter can be serious mountaineering terrain. Allow a full day minimum for any worthwhile walk, ideally two or three if you're doing the longer ridge traverses.

If you're camping in the area, these mountains are what you came for. They're the reason you picked Llanberis Touring Park or Llyn Gwynant Campsite in the first place.
