Moel Berfedd

The walk up Moel Berfedd sits just outside Caernarfon and delivers proper Snowdonia views without the crowds you'll fight on Snowdon itself. It's a modest peak at 1,296 feet, which means most reasonably fit walkers can manage it in under two hours return - no technical gear needed, just decent boots and a weather eye on the clouds.

What you get at the top is genuinely worth the climb. On a clear day, the vista sweeps across the Menai Strait towards Anglesey, back towards the Snowdon massif, and down into the valleys below. The peak itself is windswept and bare, which sounds bleak but actually feels rather wild and energising. You're standing on proper Welsh mountain, not a visitor attraction dressed up as one.

The approach is straightforward enough from the Caernarfon side - there's a decent footpath that doesn't require map-reading skills, though it does get boggy in wet weather. Allow two to three hours if you're not rushed. Walkers absolutely get the most from this one. Families with older children will find it manageable; younger kids might struggle with the sustained gradient.

Several campsites cluster within spitting distance - Llyn Gwynant sits barely two miles away, Bryn Dinas Camping Pods another three, and if you're based at Llanberis Touring Park six miles south, Moel Berfedd makes a cracking morning objective before heading elsewhere. It's free, it's accessible, and it punches above its weight for effort expended.
