Carnedd Llewelyn

The walk up Carnedd Llewelyn is proper serious business - this 3,484-footer in the Conwy range isn't a gentle meander. You're looking at a relentless slog through moorland that gets steeper the higher you climb, with loose scree near the summit that'll test your ankles. But once you're up there, the views across Snowdonia are genuinely worth the punishment. On a clear day you can see right across to the Irish Sea, and the sense of being properly high in the mountains hits you hard.

This one's for walkers who actually know what they're doing - families with young kids will struggle, and anyone after a casual stroll should look elsewhere. Allow a solid four to five hours for the round trip, depending on fitness. There's no charge, no facilities on the mountain itself, and you'll want to go early to bag a decent parking spot at the trailhead. The weather here changes on a whim, so check conditions before you head out.

It pairs well with exploring the lower peaks and valleys nearby - Bangor is the nearest proper town for supplies and a hot meal afterwards. Serious hikers will return again and again.
