Carn Wen - The Druid's circle

You'll find yourself standing in moorland that feels properly remote, looking at a circle of stones that's been here since someone decided to arrange them around 4,000 years ago. Carn Wen is one of those Bronze Age monuments that doesn't shout for attention - no visitor centre, no interpretive boards, just you and the rocks and a lot of sky. The circle itself sits on high ground near Llandrindod Wells, which means the walk up there rewards you with views across Powys that make the effort worthwhile. It's the kind of place where you genuinely feel like you're standing somewhere ancient.

If you're into archaeology or stone circles, you'll absolutely get something from this. The site isn't difficult to reach if you know where you're going, though it's not the sort of thing families with young children will spend hours at - twenty minutes to walk around and absorb it, and you're done. The surrounding moorland is cracking for longer walks if you fancy extending the visit.

Being free and accessible year-round is a genuine plus. There's no admission fee or specific opening hours to worry about, which means you can time it around the weather or other activities. If you're based at one of the local caravan parks - The Pines or Wyeside are both within two miles of Llandrindod Wells - Carn Wen makes an easy half-day excursion. It's worth combining with a walk through the Elan Valley area or other Bronze Age sites in the region rather than treating it as a standalone trip, but if you're passing through mid-Wales anyway, it's absolutely worth the detour.
