Llyn Gwyn

The water at Llyn Gwyn sits dark and still, ringed by moorland that feels properly remote even though you're only a short drive from Llandrindod Wells. It's a small lake, the sort of place you'd miss entirely if someone hadn't told you it was there - which is rather the point.

There's a walking path around the perimeter that takes about an hour at a leisurely pace. The views across the valley aren't dramatic in a postcard sense, but they're real and quiet, with hardly another person in sight even on weekends. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; the moorland attracts curlews and the occasional red grouse. The walk itself is straightforward - nothing steep or technical - so it suits families with older kids and anyone after a proper leg-stretch without the crowds.

This is very much a local's spot rather than a tourist destination, which means no facilities, no admission charges, and no gift shop. Arrive early if the weather's decent, because the car park is tiny. The light gets moody here in late afternoon, which photographers tend to prefer, though midday is fine if you just want an uncomplicated walk.

If you're based at The Pines or Wyeside - both brilliant caravan parks within a few miles - Llyn Gwyn works nicely as a half-morning excursion before heading to the Elan Valley reservoirs or back to Llandrindod Wells proper. Don't expect drama. Expect peace, and exactly what you came for.
