Capel Parsel

The tiny whitewashed chapel sits alone on the Gwynedd hillside, a proper full stop in the landscape. Capel Parsel is small enough that you could miss it entirely if you weren't looking - which is rather the point. Built in the 1800s, it's a working Methodist chapel that opens its doors to anyone wanting a moment's quiet away from the coast.

What you get is simplicity. Plain wooden pews, a modest pulpit, whitewash and slate. No gift shop, no café, no interpretation boards telling you what to think. Just the chapel itself and the view over the surrounding hills. On a clear day you can see right across to Barmouth, which sits about three miles down the valley.

Walkers and history types will appreciate the walk in. It's not a stroll round a manicured churchyard - you're scrambling through proper countryside to reach it, which makes arrival feel earned. Worth allowing 45 minutes to an hour, depending on fitness and how long you want to sit inside.

If you're based at Sunbeach Holiday Park, this makes a decent half-day outing. The chapel itself takes maybe 20 minutes to explore, so pair it with a longer valley walk. Families with very young children might find it underwhelming - there's nothing interactive here, and it's genuinely in the middle of nowhere. But if you're after somewhere that feels genuinely off the radar and want to see how rural Welsh Methodism worked, it's worth the detour. Free admission, assuming the door's unlocked.
