Camp Mandingo

Just outside Berwick-upon-Tweed sits a rather curious slice of Cold War Britain. Camp Mandingo was a United States Army training base during the 1950s and 60s, when NATO presence in the region was taken seriously enough to warrant proper infrastructure on Scottish soil. Today what remains is mostly earthworks and foundations - you won't find much in the way of buildings or visitor facilities, but that's rather the point.

It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of detective work. History enthusiasts and anyone interested in military archaeology will find something to chew on here, picking through what's left of the American occupation. The site itself is fairly minimal though - don't expect a heritage centre or interpretation boards. You're essentially walking around fields spotting where structures once stood, which means it works best as an add-on to a broader Berwick visit rather than a destination in itself.

Given its proximity to Haven Berwick Holiday Centre and the other caravan parks clustered within five miles, it could slot into a longer Northumberland break. The wider area - proper border country with actual history layered thick - will keep you occupied far longer than Camp Mandingo alone will manage. Worth a detour if you're staying locally and fancy a twenty-minute wander, but don't plan your whole trip around it. The Tweed valley and Berwick's own fortifications are far stronger draws.
