About Calfhow Pike
This is walker territory, pure and simple. Families with older kids who don't mind a grind will find it rewarding, but toddlers will struggle. The fell doesn't have the dramatic appeal of Catbells or Helvellyn - it's more intimate, less Instagram-famous. That means fewer people queuing for photos at the summit, which some of us reckon is exactly the point.
The views repay the effort. On a clear day you're looking south across the Thirlmere reservoir towards the High Street range, and north towards Blencathra. The approach from the west is straightforward, following established paths with minimal scrambling. Allow a full morning or afternoon. Admission is free - as with most fells in the Lake District, you simply turn up and walk.
Stay at Threlkeld Hall or Castlerigg Hall, both within three miles, and you're perfectly placed for Calfhow plus the easier walks around Keswick itself. It's a genuine day out rather than a quick tick-box summit.
