Cairn Wood

There's something quietly compelling about wandering through Cairn Wood near Belfast - the kind of place locals know well but tourists often miss. It's a woodland area dotted with ancient cairns, those stacked stone structures that pepper the Northern Irish landscape, and walking through it feels properly atmospheric on a grey afternoon.

The wood itself is pleasant enough for a ramble, with decent paths threading between the trees and the cairns dotting the landscape like forgotten puzzle pieces. You're not looking at some grand visitor centre here - this is the real thing, genuinely quiet and contemplative. History buffs will appreciate the Bronze Age elements, though it's not sign-posted to within an inch of its life, which means you actually have to pay attention.

It works well for families with older kids or anyone after a proper woodland walk without the crowds. Allow an hour or two depending on how thoroughly you fancy exploring. The whole thing is free and accessible, which is always welcome.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Dundonald Touring is just 3.5 miles away - this makes for a good escape from the facilities without going far. The Pods at Streamvale is even closer at 3.8 miles if you're after something more upmarket. Neither requires a massive drive before you're back among trees and history. It's the kind of stop that rewards a bit of curiosity but won't consume your whole afternoon.
