Caer Fawr

The walk up Caer Fawr from Builth Wells takes you through proper Mid Wales countryside - rolling farmland giving way to rougher moorland the higher you climb. It's not a massive peak by any measure, but the views back towards the Wye Valley and across to the Brecon Beacons are genuinely worth the effort on a clear day.

Getting there means parking near Builth Wells and tackling what's essentially a steady uphill trudge through fields and heathland. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on your fitness. It's straightforward enough that families with older kids won't struggle, though younger ones might find the final push tedious. The peak itself is an iron Age fort - you can still make out the ramparts if you know what to look for, which adds a bit of historical weight to what's otherwise a decent local hill walk.

There's nothing fancy here. No visitor centre, no facilities on the hill itself. That's rather the point. You're paying nothing except your petrol to Builth Wells, and you get an honest bit of Wales without the crowds. Best tackled on a dry day - the ground gets boggy after rain and the views disappear fast in cloud.

If you're camping at Penmaenau Farm or Celtic Woodland just outside town, this makes an excellent morning walk before settling in for the afternoon. It's the sort of place that rewards getting up early, when you'll likely have the summit to yourself. Nothing spectacular, but a solid addition to a walking-focused park holiday in the area.
