Caer Einon

The walk up Caer Einon from Builth Wells is proper rewarding - a stiff climb but nothing that'll have you gasping for air if you're reasonably fit. You're looking at a modest peak in Powys that commands views across the Wye Valley and beyond, the kind of vantage point where the landscape just opens up in front of you. The summit itself is worth the effort, though it's not dramatic in the Alpine sense. More a working hilltop than a dramatic crag.

History buffs might find something here too - there's an old fort site up top, though these days it's more about the walk than standing around reading plaques. The path from Builth Wells takes you through proper Welsh countryside, green and rolling, and if you time it right you'll have the place largely to yourself.

Allow two to three hours for a steady round trip from town, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the peak itself, so bring water and a packed lunch if you're stopping for a proper break. Best in late spring through early autumn when the weather's most reliable - Welsh hills can turn misty and grim remarkably fast.

If you're camping nearby at Penmaenau Farm or Fforest Fields, this makes a solid day out that doesn't require booking ahead or forking out entry fees. Mix it with exploring Builth Wells itself and you've got a decent chunk of a week sorted. Walkers will appreciate it more than families with young children - it's not a quick twenty-minute thing.
