Cadman's Wood

Cadman's Wood is a proper slice of Kent woodland just outside Hythe - the sort of place that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards anyone who actually goes there. It's a working forest rather than a manicured nature reserve, so expect real trees, real mud, and the occasional logging operation rather than pristine paths and interpretive boards.

Walking through here feels genuinely quiet. The canopy does its job, light filters through in patches, and you get that woodland smell that clears your head after weeks in towns. There are paths that let you move through without getting hopelessly lost, though it's not a big commercial setup with colour-coded routes.

It suits serious walkers more than families after a quick stroll. If you've got kids under eight, they'll likely tire before you've got into it properly. Teenagers might actually enjoy the fact it's not trying too hard. History buffs won't find much here - it's just woodland, no ruins or plaques.

Given it's free and within a few miles of Port Lympne Safari Park and Dunn Street Farm Campsite, it works as a morning escape while you're basing yourself nearby. Head there early in the day when the light's better and fewer people are about. Allow two hours minimum if you want more than a quick wander - three if you want proper time among the trees.
