Bushy Land

The New Forest sprawls across Hampshire in a way that makes you understand why locals guard it jealously. The woodland floor shifts between dense bracken and open glades, depending on which direction you wander. Walkers will get the most from this - there's genuine walking to be done here, not a stroll round a manicured loop. Come autumn when the light gets low and golden, it's genuinely worth the drive from town. An hour or two is realistic rather than a full day outing. The nearest town is Southampton, about 20 minutes away, which means you can base yourself at somewhere like Beechen Glamping and have proper forest days without the crowds you'd find at the more famous New Forest spots. It's not a destination in itself - it's the bit of Hampshire that makes forest holidays actually work. Free to roam, naturally, no facilities to speak of, so bring water and don't expect toilets.
