Bury Plantation

A proper woodland walk through mixed broadleaf and conifer, Bury Plantation sits just east of Royston and feels a world away from the Cambridgeshire flatlands you might expect. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss, the sort of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of distant traffic.

It's a straightforward woodland experience - no visitor centre, no marked trails that I could find, just trees and paths that fork off in several directions. The plantation works best as a two or three-mile ramble rather than a destination in itself. You won't find dramatic vistas or ancient monuments, just the quiet rhythm of a managed forest where locals come to clear their heads on a Sunday afternoon.

Walkers will get genuine value here. Families with young kids might manage 45 minutes before boredom sets in, unless they're the type who'll turn every fallen log into an adventure. The woodland is mature enough to feel proper wild but not so dense that you'll get lost. Spring is lovely for bluebells, though you'll need to catch it early.

If you're staying at Guilden Gate Glamping or Pightle Farm just down the road, this works as your daily walk without needing the car. It's the kind of place that fills the gap between breakfast and a pub lunch - not essential, but genuinely pleasant if woodland is your thing. Free, of course. No facilities to speak of, so bring water.
