Royston Town Centre

Royston itself is worth a wander, though it's not going to blow your mind. The town centre sits at the convergence of the A10 and A505, making it a proper historic crossroads - and you can feel that in the layout. The High Street has the bones of something medieval about it, with a decent market square that's seen traders come and go for centuries.

The main draw is the Royston Cave, a mysterious 17th-century chalk excavation beneath the town centre that's either a hermitage or a Templar refuge, depending on who you ask. It's compact - you'll be done in twenty minutes - and genuinely odd to shuffle through. Free to look inside from street level, though opening times are limited.

Beyond the cave, expect independent shops, a few decent pubs, and the kind of tired-but-functional high street you find in most market towns. It's not Instagram-worthy, but it's perfectly pleasant for an hour if you're passing through. Families with younger kids might find the cave interesting for five minutes; walkers will be better served by the countryside around it.

If you're staying at Guilden Gate Glamping just 2.8 miles away - or any of the other parks dotted nearby - Royston makes an easy rainy-day detour. Shepreth Mill, at 4.7 miles, would be a reasonable base for a night. Don't plan your holiday around it, but don't skip it either if you're in the area.
