Royston Cave

You'll find yourself standing in the middle of Royston's high street, staring down at a metal grille set into the pavement. Below it lies one of England's strangest archaeological puzzles - a chalk cave carved into the bedrock, covered entirely in medieval carvings that nobody can quite agree on.

The cave itself is small, roughly egg-shaped, and about 30 feet deep. What makes it peculiar is the sheer volume of carved symbols covering every inch of wall and ceiling - crosses, faces, mysterious religious figures, and geometric patterns that have stumped historians for centuries. Theories range from a medieval hermitage to some sort of Templar hideout, but the truth remains wonderfully elusive.

Access is limited - you're looking through the grille rather than descending inside on most visits, though occasional tours do happen. It's worth ringing Royston Town Council beforehand to check what's actually open when you visit. The whole experience takes about ten minutes, which sounds short until you start properly examining the carvings. History obsessives will find themselves crouched over the grille for far longer, squinting at every detail.

Families with younger kids might find it disappointing if they're expecting something more hands-on, though older children who've got into medieval mysteries tend to find it genuinely compelling. If you're camped at Guilden Gate Glamping or Shepreth Mill just down the road, it's absolutely worth a quick detour while you're passing through Royston town centre. Combines well with a proper explore of the surrounding countryside.
