Burton Mill Pond

The pond sits just outside Petworth, a proper water-mill creation that's been here since medieval times. You're looking at a decent expanse of still water surrounded by woodland - the sort of place that feels genuinely quiet, which is saying something in Sussex. The mill race still runs through, and you can see the old workings if you know where to look.

It's a walker's spot rather than a destination in itself. The paths around the water are pleasant enough, the reflections decent on a calm morning, and it's the kind of place locals disappear to for forty minutes of thinking time. Not Instagram gold, but real. History buffs will appreciate the industrial heritage - there's a working watermill story here that goes back further than most people realise.

The campsite options nearby are strong. Graffham Camping and Caravanning Club Site sits barely two miles away and carries proper weight with families. Woodfire at Westerlands is closer still at 1.7 miles if you want glamping with a bit more comfort. Wakestone & Wild Glamping over at 3.6 miles is worth it if you're after something more upmarket.

Allow an hour to walk around without rushing. There's no entry fee or formal opening hours - it's one of those Sussex water features that simply exists. Spring's the best time when the surrounding woodland fills out. It won't dominate a holiday, but paired with Petworth House and the town's antique shops, it slots in nicely as a morning ramble before lunch.
