Burnt mound

A mound of blackened stones on the edge of Barnard Castle doesn't sound like much, but Burnt Mound is genuinely absorbing if you care about how people actually lived thousands of years ago. Bronze Age folk dumped tonnes of fire-cracked rock here - the evidence suggests they were heating stones in fires then plunging them into water-filled troughs to boil liquid. Cooking? Brewing? Textile dyeing? Nobody's entirely sure, which is half the appeal.

The site itself is modest - you're looking at an earthwork roughly 30 metres across with a visible hollow where the trough would have been. It's the kind of place that makes sense once you're standing on it, reading the interpretation board, but won't take you more than twenty minutes to properly absorb. Worth a visit if you're already exploring Barnard Castle's castle and riverside walks, less so if you're making a special trip.

Archaeology enthusiasts and anyone interested in Iron Age and Bronze Age life will find it genuinely interesting. Kids might struggle unless they're already keen on prehistoric stuff - there's no visitor centre, no hands-on elements, just the mound itself and some good views across the valley. Free to visit as far as we could tell, and accessible year-round.

Stay at Leekworth or Mickleton Mill caravan parks nearby and you're perfectly positioned for a half-day exploring both the mound and Barnard Castle proper. Combine it with a walk along the Tees valley for a proper morning out.
