Burnmouth Kirk

The kirk sits alone on the clifftop above Burnmouth, a squat stone building that's been taking the wind and salt spray for centuries. There's not much to it - a small church with whitewashed walls and a handful of graves scattered around - but that's rather the point. You're standing on the edge of something proper wild here, looking down at the rocks and the North Sea stretching to Scotland.

It's a five-minute detour from the main road between Berwick-upon-Tweed and the coast, and locals will tell you it's been serving the tiny village below since medieval times, though what you see now is mostly 17th-century rebuild. The interior is basic - stone walls, wooden pews, the sort of place where you can hear the wind properly. Not a destination in itself, but if you're walking the cliffpath or exploring this stretch of Northumberland coast, it's worth the short scramble up.

Bring proper shoes. The path's not marked and the ground's rough. On a grey day it feels genuinely isolated; on a clear day the views towards the Scottish border are worth the trip alone. Allow twenty minutes maximum to look round, unless you're the type who sits quietly in old churches for an hour.
