Burnmoor

The walk up Burnmoor won't take long, but the effort feels worthwhile once you're up there. It's one of those Lake District fringes peaks that doesn't demand a full day's commitment - more of a brisk two-hour jaunt from Carnforth way, which makes it ideal if you're camped at Orcaber Farm or The Dalesbridge and fancy stretching your legs without committing to a serious mountain day.

From the summit you get proper views across to the higher fells. On a clear day the sight lines stretch far enough to make the modest height feel less modest. The ground underfoot is moorland, open enough that you won't get hemmed in by forestry, though it does get boggy in places so good boots matter.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination for families with very small children - the terrain isn't particularly interesting for them, and there's nothing at the top except views and heather. History enthusiasts might find the moorland itself atmospheric, but don't expect ruins or heritage plaques.

The real value is as part of a broader walking weekend rather than a standalone trip. Pair it with other local walks around the Lancaster and Carnforth area, or use it as a warm-up before tackling the higher peaks nearby. Primrose Glamping Pods would be a comfortable base for that kind of trip. Weather dependent - moorland summits get windy and visibility drops fast, so pick a decent day.
