Burhill Ridge

You'll spot Burhill Ridge rising above the moorland north of Skipton, a proper fell walk that rewards the effort without demanding mountaineering experience. It's the kind of hike where the view actually justifies the climb - moorland spreads out below, and on clear days you catch sight of the Pennine backbone stretching away. Allow two to three hours for a round trip from the nearest access point, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's steep enough to feel like proper exercise, open enough that you're not hemmed in by woodland, and the kind of place where you genuinely feel you've achieved something without needing ropes or specialist kit. Families with teenagers keen on hill walking will manage fine; younger kids might find the ascent a slog unless they're already keen hikers.

The ridge sits perfectly within striking distance of the holiday parks dotted around - Howgill Lodge is just 2.3 miles away, and Breaks Fold Farm and Catgill Farm are easily accessible for a morning or afternoon outing. It's the sort of walk that pairs well with a longer Dales trip: close enough to base yourself in the Skipton area, far enough from the honeypots that you won't be dodging crowds. No facilities on the fell itself, so bring water and something to eat. Best visited outside the peak summer season when the moors aren't baking or bog-sodden.
