Bullough Park

The River Ribble winds through Bullough Park just outside Clitheroe, and this is where you come if you want something a bit quieter than the main attractions in the market town itself. It's a proper nature reserve rather than a manicured park - think woodland walks, open grassland, and genuine wildlife spotting rather than formal gardens.

You'll find paths that meander through different habitats. The woodland sections are thick enough to feel properly secluded, while the open areas give you decent views across the valley. It's the sort of place where you might see buzzards overhead or catch sight of deer if you're lucky enough and arrive early. Birdwatchers make good use of it, especially along the river stretches where you get waders and other water birds depending on the season.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited - there's walking but not much else to hold attention for a full day. Older children and proper walkers will get more from it. Take a pair of decent binoculars and move slowly if you're after wildlife.

It works well as a breather between days at nearby Rossendale Holiday Cottages or Dearden Wood if you're staying in the area for a week. The walks are flexible enough that you can do an hour or make an afternoon of it depending on how much time you have. Free access and open year-round, though it's best in spring and early summer when the woodland comes alive.
