Bryn Hill

The walk up Bryn Hill is exactly what you want from a Powys peak - short enough to fit between breakfast and lunch, steep enough to earn the views without requiring mountaineering kit. From Bishops Castle, it's barely twenty minutes' drive to the trailhead, and the summit itself takes about forty minutes to reach on foot, give or take depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath on the sharper sections.

What you get at the top is proper Mid Wales countryside in all directions - rolling green hills, a patchwork of fields, and on a clear day the kind of visibility that makes you understand why someone bothered to walk up here in the first place. It's not dramatic in the Alpine sense, but it's solid walking terrain with genuine views as reward. The route itself is well-defined enough that you won't spend ages wondering if you're going the right way, which matters when you're trying to actually enjoy yourself rather than stare at a phone.

Families with older kids will get the most from it. Younger ones might find the climb a slog, though the summit's open enough that they can run around once they're up there. Serious hikers will want to combine this with other walks in the area - it works well as a morning adventure before heading to one of the nearby glamping spots like Woodbatch or Wild Valley for the evening. The whole thing is free, naturally, and there's no specific season that ruins it, though you'll want decent weather to make the views worthwhile. Jeans and proper boots are your friend here.
