Brunton Turret - Hadrian's Wall

The stone tower commands the landscape about five miles west of Hexham, sitting squat and resolute on the Wall itself. Brunton Turret is one of the best-preserved examples along Hadrian's Wall - a proper Roman fortlet that once housed soldiers keeping watch over the frontier. You're looking at roughly 2,000 years of history compressed into a few metres of stonework.

Walking up to it, the scale becomes apparent. These weren't imposing structures, more functional watchtowers designed to cover sight lines between the larger forts. The turret sits at a high point, and on a clear day you can stand where a Roman sentry once stood and trace the Wall's line stretching east and west. The surrounding moorland gives context - this was remote, windswept work.

Historically minded visitors will spend 20 minutes properly examining it; families with younger kids might manage ten before the moors lose their novelty. Walkers love it because it slots perfectly into longer stretches of the Wall path - there's proper walking country here. Admission appears free, though there's little in the way of facilities on site.
