Brunton Turret (26B)

This Roman turret is one of the best-preserved sections of Hadrian's Wall you'll find, and it's genuinely impressive once you're standing in front of it. Built around AD 125, Turret 26B sits just outside Hexham - the stone structure rises from the ground with enough character that you can almost imagine the Roman soldiers stationed here two thousand years ago. The turret itself is compact but well-maintained, with English Heritage doing a decent job of keeping it accessible and interpretable for visitors.

You're looking at maybe thirty to forty minutes here if you take your time reading the information boards and photographing it properly. The walk to reach it is straightforward enough, though the surrounding moorland can get windy - dress accordingly. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own; the real appeal is for Roman history buffs or anyone doing a proper Hadrian's Wall pilgrimage. It works brilliantly as part of a larger day out along the wall itself rather than a standalone stop.

Admission is free, which is a genuine bonus. If you're based at either Sycamore Glamping Pods or East Farm Glamping nearby, this makes for a proper half-day excursion without breaking the bank. The moorland views around here are worth the trip alone, particularly on a clear day when you can see across to the Pennines. It's the sort of place that rewards people who care about the detail rather than casual visitors after quick snaps.
