Brownthwaite Pike

The walk up Brownthwaite Pike doesn't take long, but it rewards you with views across Morecambe Bay that stretch for miles. You're looking at a modest fell above Carnforth - nothing dramatic, nothing that'll take your breath away with sheer altitude - but the climb is straightforward enough for most walkers and the summit gives you proper perspective on the Lancashire coastline.

The path is well-trodden and keeps climbing steadily without becoming a slog. Allow a couple of hours return from the car park if you're moving at a decent pace. It's the sort of fell that works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Primrose Glamping Pods and Once Upon a Fell are both close by - because you can knock this out before breakfast without feeling like you've committed your whole day to it.

Families with older kids will find it manageable. Younger ones might lose interest on the descent, truth be told, so come prepared with snacks and the promise of something else afterwards. The real appeal here is for walkers who want a quick morning objective or those using it as a warm-up fell before tackling bigger peaks elsewhere in Cumbria.

It's free, obviously - it's a mountain - and there are no facilities at the top beyond the view itself. Go when it's clear, because cloud cover turns this into a fairly unrewarding plod through nothing much. On a decent day though, it's a proper tonic and worth the short detour from Carnforth.
