Brown Dodd Top

Brown Dodd Top is a modest fell in the Pennines south of Barnard Castle, reaching 469 metres and offering proper views across the moorland if you pick a clear day. It's the sort of walk that rewards you without demanding much - two hours up and back from the nearest car park, with decent paths most of the way. The summit itself is a bit anticlimactic if you're honest - just a pile of stones and wide moorland stretching out in every direction - but that's rather the point. There's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities whatsoever. You're out on the fell.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not hard enough to be a serious undertaking, but it's not a stroll either. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the distance and the exposed terrain when the wind picks up. The views towards Teesdale and the surrounding peaks make it worthwhile, and on a good afternoon in spring or autumn it's genuinely lovely.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Barnard Castle - Leekworth or Mickleton Mill are closest, barely twenty minutes' drive away - this works as a half-day expedition that doesn't require you to venture far from base. It pairs well with exploring Barnard Castle itself, which is proper worth a visit. Allow two to three hours including a break at the top.
