Brown Dodd

Brown Dodd isn't marked on every map, which rather adds to its appeal. This moorland peak sits just outside Barnard Castle in County Durham, offering proper fell-walking terrain without needing a full Lake District expedition. The walk itself is straightforward enough - nothing technical, but the moorland can be boggy underfoot depending on recent weather, so decent boots matter.

You're looking at roughly an hour to the summit if you're moderately fit, with views across the Pennines that justify the effort on a clear day. The landscape around here feels genuinely wild, even though civilization isn't far away. It's the sort of place where you might walk for twenty minutes without seeing another soul, which feels rare these days.

Historically minded walkers will appreciate the context - this is proper old walking country, used for centuries. There's nothing built on the summit itself, just the hill and the wind and the space.

For families staying at Leekworth or Mickleton Mill caravan parks nearby, it's a solid half-day outing that won't leave younger kids shattered. Serious hikers might combine it with other peaks in the area to make a proper day of it. The elevation gain is manageable but real enough to feel worthwhile.

Best visited in dry spells - moorland that's been rained on heavily becomes properly heavy going. Summer and early autumn work well. Free to access, no facilities on or near the summit, so bring water.
