The Test Valley around Stockbridge hides one of those proper wild corners that most visitors drive straight past. Broughton Sports Field is a nature reserve that rewards the sort of person who actually stops to look at things - bird watchers especially will find themselves glued to the spot during migration season.

It's a modest stretch of open ground and water meadow, the kind of place where you'll see lapwings, snipe, and if you're lucky, a grey wagtail working the shallows. The real draw is the unpredictability of it. Come back twice in a month and you'll see completely different species. Spring and autumn are peak times, though winter brings its own rewards if you can handle the damp.

You're looking at an hour, maybe two if you've got decent binoculars and patience. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring a flask. Admission appears to be free, though it's worth checking locally in Stockbridge first.

As a hook into a wider park holiday, this works well. The Meadow Glamping is practically on your doorstep - less than half a mile away - making it easy to slip over at dawn when the light's best and the birds are vocal. If you're based at Stockbridge View or the Salisbury Hillside Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite a few miles out, it's a worthwhile detour between longer walks elsewhere in the valley. It won't keep you entertained all afternoon, but for genuine nature enthusiasts, it's absolutely worth the stop.
