Broughton Down Nature Reserve

The chalk downland around Broughton Down rolls out in proper Hampshire fashion - open, windswept, with views that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's a nature reserve in the truest sense: no visitor centre, no tea shop, just you and the grassland that's been carefully managed to bring back the wildflowers and butterflies that were nearly gone.

What you get is a good walk across downland, the sort of terrain that makes you work for the views but rewards you when you reach the top. Spring and early summer are when it really sings - the chalkland flora is extraordinary if you know what you're looking at. Bird watchers come for the skylarks and the rarer species that thrive here. It's not dramatic or showy; it's subtle and genuinely wild in a way the South East rarely is anymore.

This suits walkers and nature enthusiasts far more than casual visitors. Kids might find it a bit bare after half an hour unless they're into insects and plants. The nearest town is Stockbridge, which has supplies and decent pubs if you need refuelling beforehand.

Sunrise to sunset access, so you're working with daylight hours. Free, as far as these reserves go. Allow two to three hours to do it properly. It pairs well with a stay at The Meadow Glamping just over a mile away - you could easily combine this with other downland walks in the area. Honest ground, honest views. Not for everyone, but exactly right if you want Hampshire without the crowds.
