Broughton Covert

Walk into Broughton Covert and you're into proper woodland - the kind where the light filters through in dusty shafts and you can actually hear yourself think. This forest sits just outside Bishops Castle in Powys, a genuinely quiet corner of Mid Wales that doesn't get the tourist crush of Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons.

It's a straightforward woodland walk, really. No dramatic viewpoints or marked trails that I'm aware of, but that's rather the point. You're here to move through trees, listen to birds, maybe spot a roe deer if you're lucky and early. The paths are soft underfoot from years of leaf fall, and the canopy keeps things cool even on warm days. I'd allow a good hour or ninety minutes depending on how far you want to push in.

This works best for walkers wanting a quieter alternative to busier forests, or families who don't need visitor centres and themed play areas - just woods where kids can genuinely explore. It's free to access, which is always welcome. The nearest proper base is Bishops Castle itself, a genuinely charming market town about ten minutes' drive away with some decent pubs and a surprisingly good local food scene.

If you're staying at Foxholes Campsite just outside town, or any of the glamping spots scattered around - Camlad Valley or Wild Valley - Broughton Covert makes a brilliant half-day outing. Don't expect drama. Do expect proper woodland and peace.
