Broomdykes Tile Works (site of)

All that remains of Broomdykes Tile Works is a scatter of industrial debris and brick fragments in the Northumberland countryside, a few miles from Berwick-upon-Tweed. Once a working ceramics factory, it's now an archaeological site that rewards only the keenest heritage hunters - don't come expecting a visitor centre or interpretation boards.

What you're looking at is Victorian enterprise gone quiet. The works operated during the nineteenth century, producing tiles when such manufacturing was scattered across Britain rather than concentrated in the Midlands. Walking the site, you'll spot kiln remains and fragments of the pottery itself, pieces of the everyday objects that once left here in crates and wagons.

This is emphatically not for casual visitors. If you're into industrial archaeology and the unglamorous side of Victorian Britain, though, it's worth a detour. Photographers interested in ruins and textile patterns might find something here too. The landscape context matters as much as the finds themselves - it's as much about understanding how the countryside once worked as about the ruins.

Being unmanned and unmarked, check locally in Berwick before heading out - you'll need proper directions and ideally some archaeological knowledge to make sense of what you're seeing. It's genuinely rough ground in places. If you're based at Chainbridge Touring Caravan Site or Ord House Country Park, you could combine it with walks and the town itself, but don't travel specifically for this. It's a bonus, not a destination.
