Broombridgedean Linn Waterfall

Water thunders down Broombridgedean Linn in a proper dramatic fashion, especially after rain when the Northumberland moorland has had a soaking. It's the kind of waterfall that looks modest until you actually stand in front of it - then you realise why locals bother hiking out here. The falls drop into a dark pool surrounded by stone and woodland, and there's something bracing about the spray hitting your face on a blustery day.

Walkers get the most from this spot. It's not a five-minute stroll from a car park; you're committing to a decent hike across moorland to reach it, which means most casual visitors never make it. That's actually its biggest draw. The walk itself is rather good - Wooler lies about five miles south, and the approach takes you through proper hill country with views across the Cheviot range if the weather cooperates.

Allow two to three hours for the full outing, depending on fitness and how long you want to linger at the falls themselves. There's no charge for visiting, obviously - it's just landscape. Time your visit for spring or after heavy rain if you want the dramatic water show. Summer can leave it disappointingly trickly.
