Brook Rural Museum

The Brook Rural Museum sits just outside Hythe and does exactly what it says on the tin - shows you how people actually lived and worked in rural Kent over the past couple of centuries. You're walking through reconstructed farm buildings, looking at agricultural tools, carts, old kitchens, and the kind of domestic clutter that makes history feel real rather than dusty.

It's a proper hands-on place. Kids can get involved with some of the exhibits rather than just staring through glass, which makes the difference between an afternoon well spent and one where you're dragging them round by their ears. Adults who grew up on farms or have any connection to rural life will find themselves oddly emotional - there's something about seeing your grandparents' way of life preserved that hits different.

Allow a couple of hours if you're moving at a reasonable pace. It's not massive, but it rewards proper attention. The outdoor sections are worth lingering over, especially if the weather's decent.

If you're camping at Dunn Street Farm or Broadhembury just down the road, this slots in nicely as a rainy-day option or a quieter morning activity before heading to Port Lympne Safari Park for the afternoon. It's the sort of place that wouldn't be your sole reason for a Kent trip, but it's genuinely worth an hour or two if you're in the area with time to kill.
