Broken road

The tarmac splits in half like someone took a knife to the moorland. That's Broken Road - a short stretch of cracked asphalt on the Dark Peak that's become something of a pilgrimage for landscape photographers and anyone after a proper vantage point across Hope Valley. You'll find it sitting above the A6027 near Castleton, and honestly, the draw is the view rather than the road itself. On a clear day the valley unfolds below you with real drama - rolling hills, stone walls cutting through fields, and on good visibility you can pick out Chapel-en-le-Frith in the distance. The walk up takes about fifteen minutes from the nearest parking, which keeps the crowds manageable compared to some Peak District hotspots. It's not a destination that'll consume your afternoon. Twenty minutes here, some photos, and you're done. That said, it's the kind of stop that justifies itself on a driving route through the area, particularly if you're timing it for golden hour. Worth the detour? Only if you're already heading through Hope Valley. The broken surface itself is just a bit of quirky geology - nothing that'll blow your mind in person, though it photographs brilliantly. Families with mobile youngsters will find it accessible enough, though the moorland terrain either side is exposed and windswept. If you're camping at Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club just down the road, it makes for an easy morning exploration before heading to the bigger attractions at Mam Tor or Speedwell Cavern.
