Broken Back

The walk up Broken Back is short, steep, and properly rewarding - especially if you're staying at the caravan site just outside Moffat. It's not a mountain in the dramatic sense, more a chunky hill that catches the afternoon light beautifully when you're standing on top of it.

The summit sits around 1,340 feet, and you can see right across the Lowlands from up there. On a decent day the views south towards the Solway Firth are worth the huff and puff. The actual peak is marked simply enough, and the whole route takes maybe 45 minutes if you're moving at a reasonable pace. The path itself is well-trodden but muddy in places - take proper boots, not trainers.

It's ideal for families with older kids or anyone wanting a half-day walk that doesn't demand a full morning's commitment. Younger children might find the final push a bit much, and there's no real shelter or facilities on the hill itself, so bring water. The climb is relentless rather than long, which some walkers find more exhausting than a gentler three-mile tramp.

If you're based at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site, this is a natural morning outing before heading elsewhere for lunch. It fits perfectly into a Dumfries and Galloway break - quick, local, and proper enough to feel like you've achieved something. The Lowlands don't shout about themselves like the Highlands do, but that's rather the point.
