Brocklehurst Wood

Walking into Brocklehurst Wood feels like stepping properly into Lancashire's quieter side. This is proper woodland - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think, with decent-sized trees offering real canopy cover and paths that wind through without feeling managed to death.

It's a solid choice if you're based at one of the Ribble Valley parks near Clitheroe and fancy getting away from the caravan site. The woodland works best for families with kids old enough to enjoy a walk without constant entertainment, and walkers who don't need dramatic views or café stops to make an outing feel worthwhile. You'll find beech and oak in here, which means it's worth visiting autumn if you can - the floor becomes a proper carpet of leaves.

Allow a good couple of hours if you want to explore without rushing. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared with water and whatever snacks your group needs. Access appears to be free, which is refreshing.

The wood sits close enough to Clitheroe that you could easily combine it with a walk around the town or a visit to Pendle Hill if the weather's co-operating. If you're staying at Pendle View Holiday Park just down the road, this becomes an obvious loop from base - no faff with driving, just straight into some actual forest rather than the usual Lancashire moorland. It's not spectacular, but it's exactly what a woodland walk should be.
