Broadshaw Rig

The walk up Broadshaw Rig catches you by surprise - what starts as a modest moorland slope suddenly opens into something far grander than the map suggests. At 2,340 feet, this isn't exactly Cairngorms territory, but it's proper hill country, and the views from the top sweep across the Lowlands in a way that makes the effort entirely worthwhile.

You'll be tackling rough grass and heather most of the way, with the path deteriorating the higher you climb. It's not technical, but it's unforgiving underfoot, so proper boots matter. The approach from Moffat takes a good two to three hours there and back, depending on fitness and how long you linger. Go on a clear day - which, granted, isn't guaranteed in Dumfries and Galloway - and you're rewarded with sightlines into England and across to the higher peaks beyond.

This is a hill for walkers, not casual strollers. Families with teenagers keen on the outdoors will manage it fine. Young children would struggle; the terrain demands concentration and the weather up top can turn foul without warning. Solo walkers and small groups make up most of the traffic here, and there's a satisfying sense of solitude even on busier weekends.

The Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site is just five miles away, making this a natural fit for a Lowland walking holiday. Broadshaw Rig isn't the flashy attraction that pulls coach tours, which is precisely why it's worth the drive from Moffat. It's the real thing - hard-won views and genuine Scottish moorland on your terms.
