Broadoak Wood

Walk into Broadoak Wood near Hythe and you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth woodland - the kind where light filters through in dusty columns and the ground is thick with leaf mould. It's a straightforward forest, no gimmicks, just trees and paths that wind through mixed deciduous growth. You'll spot oak, beech, and ash if you know what to look for, and the canopy is dense enough that even on drizzly days it's oddly peaceful in there.

This is ideal territory for walkers who want a genuine woodland experience without driving hours into the New Forest. The paths are manageable rather than brutal, so families with primary school kids can hack it without complaints about their legs, though you'll want wellies in winter when it gets boggy. There's no admission fee that we're aware of - it's the kind of place you just turn up to - which makes it excellent value for a couple of hours wandering about.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Port Lympne Safari Park is only 4.7 miles away, so you could combine woodland walks with seeing the animals - Broadoak Wood works as a quieter half-day break from busier attractions. It's genuinely pleasant rather than spectacular, but that's rather the point. Not every forest needs to be Instagram-famous. Allow two hours if you want to potter properly without rushing.
