Broadhope Hill

The walk up Broadhope Hill rewards you with proper views across the Cheviot foothills - the kind that make you understand why people live in Northumberland rather than just pass through it. It's not a mammoth summit, but that's rather the point: you get real landscape without needing fell-running legs or a packed expedition.

The approach from Wooler is straightforward enough, though it's a genuine climb and the ground can be bog-heavy depending on weather. Allow a couple of hours return if you're not particularly speedy. The summit itself is windswept and honest - no café, no markers, just you and the view rolling south towards the Cheviots proper.

This works brilliantly for walkers who want something more than a flat riverside stroll but aren't training for Ben Nevis. Families with reasonably fit kids (say, age eight upwards) will manage it fine, though expect some grumbling on the way down. The fell is genuinely quiet - you won't be queuing with crowds.
