Brierfield Baptist Church

The red-brick Victorian chapel on Brierfield's main street is exactly what you'd expect from a working Baptist church in a Lancashire mill town - solid, unpretentious, and genuinely welcoming. Built during the industrial boom when textile mills dominated the landscape, it's a proper example of 19th-century Non-conformist architecture, all confident brickwork and tall sash windows.

Unless you're into local religious history or architecture, you won't spend hours here. But if you're passing through Nelson on a walk or exploring the area's industrial heritage, it's worth poking your head in. The interior is simple and dignified - that's rather the point of Baptist churches - and the congregation is friendly if you catch them during services or events.

It's free to visit, though opening times depend entirely on whether services are on. Best bet is ringing ahead or checking their notice board. Nelson itself is a working town with genuine character, nothing touristy about it, which some folk find refreshing and others find a bit rough round the edges.

If you're staying at one of the glamping sites nearby - Higher Grange or Trawden Forest, both excellent - Brierfield makes an easy detour on a walk through the Pennine foothills. Pair it with Pendle Hill walks or the canal towpaths that lace through the area. The church fits a broader picture rather than standing alone as a destination.
