Breamore House

The first time I walked up to Breamore House, I wasn't expecting much - another stately home, probably stuffed with portraits of people nobody's heard of. I was wrong. This Tudor and Jacobean manor near Fordingbridge is genuinely worth your time, especially if you're staying at Summerlands Caravan Park or Hill Cottage Farm just down the road.

You get a proper sense of how the landed gentry actually lived here, not just the public rooms they wanted visitors to see. The furniture and paintings tell proper stories. There's a museum section too, covering local history and rural life - the kind of thing that shouldn't work but does because it's clearly been put together by people who actually care about the place.

The grounds are lovely for a wander. You're not talking about a full day's enterprise, but two to three hours feels about right - one hour inside, another pottering about outside. Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers, to be honest. The house itself requires a bit of patience to appreciate.

It's the sort of stop that makes sense if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks and want a proper cultural afternoon that doesn't involve driving miles. Fordingbridge is close enough that you could easily visit elsewhere in the New Forest area on the same day. Check opening hours before you head out - they're seasonal - and bring proper shoes if the weather's been wet.
