Brantingham Pond

The pond itself is modest - you won't mistake it for anything grand. But that's rather the point. Brantingham Pond, just outside Brough, is the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning or an afternoon when you can't be bothered with major attractions. It's a proper nature reserve, the kind where you actually spot things if you know when to look: dragonflies in summer, overwintering wildfowl in the colder months, and if you're lucky, herons stalking the shallows.

Walkers will get the most from it. The paths around the water are straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though it's not a destination that'll keep them entertained for hours. Birdwatchers absolutely should make the trip - bring binoculars and a bit of patience. The mature trees fringing the water provide good cover for spotting, and the relative quiet means you're not competing with screaming crowds.

Admission appears to be free, which is brilliant. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're properly into the wildlife. Early morning is when things are most active.
