Bowry Walls Hillfort

The Iron Age ramparts at Bowry Walls rise abruptly from farmland just outside Newbury, catching most visitors off guard. You're walking through ordinary countryside one moment, then suddenly you're standing on earth banks that are properly ancient - built around 2,500 years ago by people whose names we'll never know.

It's a small site, which is honest. The main appeal isn't dramatic views or a visitor centre with interpretive boards. It's the thrill of standing inside a genuine prehistoric fort and trying to imagine the people who dug these ditches and heaped these ramparts. The earthworks form a rough oval, and from the higher ground you get a decent sense of the landscape they were defending or controlling. On a quiet weekday you might have the place entirely to yourself.

Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will get the most from it. Kids under ten might find it a bit abstract - there's nothing to touch, no paths marked out, and the banks don't make much sense until someone explains what you're looking at. Budget forty minutes to an hour if you're taking it seriously; fifteen if you just want photos.

It works well as a half-morning stop when you're camping at Bishops Green Farm Campsite or Ravenswing Park nearby. Pair it with a proper walk elsewhere in West Berkshire rather than expecting it to fill an afternoon. Admission appears to be free - the site isn't fenced or managed - though you'll need to navigate farmland to reach it. Go in spring or autumn when the grass is manageable and you can actually see the earthworks without fighting through a jungle of summer growth.
