Bowland Knotts

The walk up Bowland Knotts from Settle is properly steep and takes it out of you, but the views across the Yorkshire Dales when you crest the top make it worthwhile. It's a cracking spot for walkers who don't mind a bit of graft - the summit sits at around 1,500 feet and the route from town is direct and unforgiving rather than scenic.

You're looking at a solid two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness, so it's not something to knock off in an afternoon if you're also exploring Settle itself. On a clear day the panorama is genuinely excellent, with the Pennines rolling away in every direction. Misty days are less inspiring, so check the weather forecast before committing.

This is a walker's walk, not a family outing. Very young children will struggle with the gradient, and there's nothing at the summit beyond views - no cafe, no bench to speak of, just open fell. But if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Peaks and Pods or Orcaber Farm, which are only a few miles out, it makes a proper day's activity without needing to travel far. The Dalesbridge Campsite is similarly close, making it convenient for a morning push if you're an early starter.

Free to access as with most UK peaks. Wear decent boots, take water, and don't underestimate how exposed it gets up there when the wind picks up. For serious walkers based around Settle, it's worth the legs.
