Bowcombe Wood

Ancient oaks and beech trees tower overhead as you follow the winding paths through this surprisingly dense woodland just south of Newport. Bowcombe Wood feels properly wild for the Isle of Wight - none of that manicured parkland nonsense you sometimes get. The paths can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are a good shout.

Families with older children will love the sense of adventure here. Younger ones might find some of the steeper sections a bit much, though there are plenty of easier routes if you stick to the main tracks. The wood connects to several public footpaths, making it perfect for a longer ramble if you're feeling energetic.

Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - the mixed canopy attracts everything from nuthatches to the occasional buzzard. Spring brings bluebells and wild garlic, while autumn turns the whole place into a proper postcard scene.

Allow a couple of hours for a decent walk, or make it a half-day expedition if you're exploring the wider network of paths. It's free to wander, naturally, and accessible year-round though winter can be pretty boggy.
