Monkham

Standing at just 65 metres above sea level, Monkham hardly qualifies as a proper peak by mainland standards. But on the Isle of Wight, this modest hill south of Newport offers surprisingly good views across the island's central chalk downs.

The walk up is gentle enough for most families, though the paths can get muddy after rain. From the top, you'll see across to the Solent on clear days, with Portsmouth's towers visible on the horizon. It's not spectacular, but it's a decent stretch of the legs if you're staying nearby.

Walkers will appreciate Monkham as part of longer routes across the downs, while families might find it a bit tame - kids could easily conquer it in 30 minutes and be asking what's next. The real appeal lies in combining it with other island walks or as a quick morning jaunt before heading to the beaches.

Access is straightforward from Newport, and you won't need to worry about admission fees or opening times. Pack layers though - the exposed position means it's often windier than expected. If you're based at one of the holiday parks around Thorness Bay or Cowes, it makes for a reasonable day out, especially combined with a trip into Newport for supplies.
