Garstons Down

From the summit at 131 metres, you can see across the Solent to Portsmouth and the mainland on a clear day. Garstons Down sits just south of Newport and offers one of the more accessible hill walks on the Isle of Wight without the crowds that swarm Tennyson Down or the Needles. The climb is gentle enough for families with older children, though toddlers might find the grass tussocks a bit tricky.

Walkers will appreciate the sense of space here - proper downland that feels wild despite being so close to the island's main town. The views take in the central chalk ridge and, if you're lucky with the weather, glimpses of the Solent. It's not the island's most dramatic peak, but that's rather the point.

Expect to spend an hour or so if you're just doing the walk up and back. Keen walkers often use Garstons Down as part of longer routes across the central downs. The area is always open and free to explore, though parking can be limited along the narrow lanes.

For families staying at nearby spots like Warren Hill Camp or Grange Farm Camping, it makes a decent afternoon outing when the beaches are too crowded. Just don't expect mountain drama - this is gentle Isle of Wight countryside at its most understated.
